July 23-25, 2019. Educators at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul from 17 state councils

Gathering Together to Build Community Across State Lines

The Minnesota Council for the Social Studies received a grant from the Midwest Teaching with Primary Sources regional office, a Library of Congress affiliate, to convene a three-day summit of educators from all 17 states within the Midwest region. The goals of the Primary Source Summit were:

  • Gather representatives of the social studies councils in the 17 states belonging to the TPS Midwest Region for a three-day summit in St. Paul, Minnesota
  • Share current successes and challenges facing social studies instruction and the social studies councils in the 17 states
  • Expand knowledge and use of Library of Congress resources in all 17 states
  • Develop the framework for a primary-source-based professional development opportunity that can be disseminated in each council’s home state
  • Build relationships between the 17 councils to sustain communication regarding social studies and primary sources

MCSS is grateful to the Midwest TPS program and the Library of Congress for the opportunity to gather together, in person, with our colleagues from around the country.
